Moonlit Sanctuary is dedicated to the conservation of Australian wildlife and their habitats. Through outstanding visitor experiences, conservation breeding, research and education, we inspire people to understand, appreciate and protect the natural environment. We are seeking an enthusiastic and engaging Education Officer to join our Life Sciences team on a casual basis. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about wildlife conservation, environmental education and creating meaningful learning experiences for students, children and school communities.

About the role

Reporting to the Coordinator – Education, the Education Officer will deliver engaging school and holiday programs that support positive interactions with wildlife and promote understanding of native species in both wild and zoo contexts. This role contributes to high-quality learning outcomes, supports inclusive and safe learning environments, and assists with administrative and operational tasks within the Education team.

Key responsibilities

  • Facilitate experiential, engaging and age-appropriate education programs for students and children.
  • Create safe, supportive and inclusive learning environments aligned with environmental education values and Moonlit Sanctuary’s conservation mission.
  • Communicate professionally with teachers, school staff, parents, students and internal stakeholders.
  • Support animal welfare, child safety and work health and safety requirements during program delivery.
  • Assist with program resources, bookings, operational coordination and routine administration as rostered.
  • Contribute feedback and ideas to support the continuous improvement of Moonlit Sanctuary’s education programs.

About you

You will bring a genuine commitment to wildlife conservation and environmental education, along with the confidence to engage learners of different ages, abilities and learning styles. You will be organised, adaptable and able to work both independently and collaboratively in a busy environment.

Essential requirements

  • Experience delivering educational programs.
  • Experience working with children and young people.
  • Sound knowledge of native wildlife, ecology and/or environmental education (or the ability to acquire this quickly), with the ability to communicate concepts clearly and engagingly.
  • Demonstrated commitment to child safety, wellbeing and inclusive practice when working with children and young people.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organisational and time-management skills.
  • Willingness to work indoors and outdoors, including in animal areas and in direct contact with wildlife, including reptiles.
  • Satisfactory background checks including a National Police Record Check, current Employee Working with Children Check or current Victorian Institute of Teaching registration and the right to work in Australia. 
  • Current Level 2 First Aid and CPR.

Desirable

  • Degree or postgraduate qualifications in Education, Environmental Science or a related field.
  • General understanding of the Victorian school curriculum and education program administration.
  • Administrative experience with an ability to contribute to day to day operations.
  • Knowledge and experience in supporting resource and procedure development. 
  • Current driver licence.
