Maru Koala & Animal Park is at the crossroads of an exciting future. With a new masterplan and an exciting, new strategic direction; we’re now looking to recruit a Head Keeper to join our growing keeper team and support our Park Manager.
Situated along the picturesque Bass Coast, just 15 minutes from Phillip Island and the penguins and only 90 minutes from Melbourne, Maru has been a family owned and operated business since its inception in 1983.

As Head Keeper, you have primary responsibility for ensuring the daily care and well-being of the animals and staff in your care. You are also responsible for the animals’ habitats, maintenance and presenting at daily demonstrations. Maru expects all its keepers to be dedicated to conservation issues, animal welfare and providing an exceptional visitor experience.

Expected duties will include the daily management and participation in the following –
Cleaning and maintenance of the animal habitats and offer input into their design. 
Manage a team of keepers and volunteers providing guidance and structure for their workday.
Manage all facets of animal husbandry including; record keeping, reproduction, capture and restraint, diets, enrichment & training programs.
Provide a high level and excellence in customer service at all times.
Undertake public speaking, demonstrations and tours, train and schedule other keepers accordingly.
Take responsibility for staff skill development and progression through competency sign off and performance appraisals.
Attend meetings, contribute to park development and perform other duties as requested by the Animal Park Manager and General Manager.

The Candidate Must Possess:
Must possess a Cert III in Wildlife & Exhibited Animal Care (or equivalent).
Experience in managing high standards of animal husbandry encompassing a broad range of knowledge across a variety of native animal species.
Demonstrated ability to manage, assess, report and communicate on observations of animal behaviour, health and welfare.
Strong ability to be flexible, cope with frequent and unpredictable workload changes to daily routine.
Demonstrated ability to enhance a positive work culture with a strong desire for continuous improvement with strong leadership skills.
Managing safety practices, processes & identifying hazards in the workplace.
Working with Children Check Card.
You will be required to work a rotating roster across a 7-day week, including weekends and public holidays.
Be capable of completing highly physical work in all-weather on a daily basis and hold a valid Australian driver's license.
